Record Number Of Marriages Registered On 06-06-06
The 6th of June 2006 marks triple 6 on the calendar, and some people see it as an auspicious date.
So the Registry of Marriages saw a record number of marriages on this date.
The 310 couples who solemnised their marriages were the highest since Valentine’s Day in 1995.
Coincidentally, the figure is six times more than the average number of 50 couples a day.
The Chinese say the number “66″ represents a smooth way ahead as well as luck.
Many took advantage of this auspicious date, but others had personal reasons for choosing 6th June, ‘06 to solemnise their wedding.
“To the Chinesethe number 060606 means lots of success” said a couple.
“The 6th of June has always been a special day for us. I asked her to be my girlfriend on the 6th, I graduated on the 6th, so this 6th has a very special meaning for us,” said a man.
“Nothing special, just easy to remember the date.” said a second couple.
In Western lore, the numbers “666″ have a completely different meaning, but people in Singapore are not fazed by this.
Groom Alex Ang said: “Personally I am a Christian and I know that 666 is a very bad number. But I don’t think it affects us in any way. To us, it is just a date. And it comes every 1,000 years, so I feel that it is special, and we won’t get a chance for another date like this.”
It also appears to be a good date for babies to be born.
Hospitals like KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital reported an increase, while Mount Alvernia reported 70 percent more births.
But they would not disclose if these were due to natural deliveries or C-sections. - CNA/ir
