Honouring the worthy

Sruti Foundation will honour three eminent artists on November 4, 5 p.m., at Dakshinamurthy Auditorium, Mylapore. Mrinalini Sarabhai, dancer and founder-director, Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, will receive the E. Krishna Iyer Medal, Carnatic musician Bombay S. Ramachandran, the Vellore Gopalachariar Award, and R.Rajagopal, secretary, Kartik Fine Arts, the M. Venkatakrishnan Memorial Award. The award function will be followed by ‘Manodharma,’ a special programme featuring the Dhananjayans and musicians Rama Ravi and T.V. Ramprasadh.

Music festival

Dharmakesari Solar K.S.Subramaniya Iyer Trust, Solar House, Mylapore, is organising its ninth inter school music competition on November 18, at Sri Dakshinamurthy Auditorium, P.S.H.S.School. The competition is based on the compositions of Jayalakshmi Sudarshan on Lord Muruga and rendered by O.S.Thiagarajan titled, ‘Adi Va Murugaa’ and songs sung by Delhi Prakash titled, ‘ Innamudham Paruga Varungal’. Music competition

Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, (Ph: 28152166) will conduct a music competition on Tyagaraja kritis, on January 25, 2008, at Vani Mahal, G.N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar. Applications are available free of cost.

Issai Mazhalai concert

A special Deepavali concert of film music will be presented by Ramjhi’s Issai Mazhalai, on November 3, 6.45 p.m., at Vani Mahal. Two finalists and a semi-finalist of Vijay TV’s Airtel Super Singer will join the Mazhalai team for the show.

Winners at fest

Swetha Vijayaraghavan (Bharatanatyam), S. Saikrishnan (vocal artist – male), Bharathi Ramasubban (vocal artist – female), Aditi Krishnaprakash (violin) and Tanjore K. Praveenkumar (mridangam) have been declared winners at the 19th annual Spirit of Youth festival of Music & Dance, held at Kasturi Srinivasan Hall, Music Academy, in memory of Ambujam Krishna, from September 28 – October 7.

Abhai’s anniversary

The 20th anniversary celebrations of Abhai (Association of Bharatanatyam Artistes of India) will be held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore, on November 3, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. L. Sabaretnam, chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kalakendra, Chennai, will preside over the inaugural function at 5.15 p.m., and present the Natya Kalanidhi Award to dancer and guru Mrinalini Sarabhai.

After the felicitation address by Prof. C.V. Chandrasekar, Mrinalini Sarabhai will release the new Abhai directory.

Harikatha & CD release

B. Suchithra, the first Harikatha artist from Ramjhi’s Issai Mazhalai troupe, will present ‘Seetha Kalyanam’ in the style of her grandmother and Harikatha legend Thanjavur T. R. Kamala Murthy, at YGP auditorium, Thirumalai Pillai Road, T.Nagar, on November 4, 6.30 p.m. Suchitra’s first Carnatic Music album will be released on the occasion.

Kamala Murthy will be honoured on the occasion. Mrs. YGP, A. Natarajan (former Director of Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai) and Alathur Vijayakumar (Kalavardhini CDs) will felicitate.

Anniversary

Samudhra magazine is celebrating its fifth anniversary on November 11. The title ‘Gnana Samudhra’ will be conferred on Randor Guy at the function.
